In The Book of Bean by Marcus Hildebrand, late millennials Adam and his partner June are wildly popular social influencers on the Christian social media platform Mass Appeal. Every detail of their lives is religiously curated and the rewards are multifold: a massive following, a continuous flow of sponsorship money, the perfect wardrobe, a chic condo—a baby on the way.
This, until a live streaming awards show, when June has a miscarriage in the spotlight. A private moment made very public, revealing the cracks in their offline lives. Adam's growing discomfort with being an Instagram husband. A power struggle over their image with Mass Appeal. And all this, with the turbulent backdrop of a ruthless trolling campaign.
Their livelihood is jeopardized. And in detaching from the vortex of social media, to find a space to grieve, the couple turns away from each other. Each one of them coping with their loss in their own way. Ultimately risking the loss of the only thing they have left. Each other.
Narrated by Adam as a psalm, an homage to their lost child, The Book of Bean is a tragi-comic exploration of the monetization and fragility of religion and relationships in today's social media environment.
The Book of Bean if forthcoming in Fall of 2027.
